2018 Superintendent of the Year
Dr. James Thompson is an esteemed Connecticut educator, and it is an honor to have him serve as the 2017 Superintendent of the Year for the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS).
Dr. Thompson served many roles in Hartford Public Schools including teacher, elementary principal, and assistant superintendent. He also served as a District Leader in Residence at the State Department of Education. In this role, his impact permeated Connecticut. He worked with many of the urban districts, superintendents and school leaders to share his knowledge of best practices in leadership, and teaching and learning.
In 2011, Dr. Thompson became the Superintendent in Bloomfield where he remains today. His exemplary leadership is demonstrated by major gains in all student outcomes including a 17 percentage point increase in graduation rates.
Dr. Thompson has received many honors at the local, state and national level. Last year, he was named Man of the Year by Connecticut’s African American Affairs Commission. He is in demand as a speaker both at the state and also the national level.
Dr. Thompson is a model for all superintendents. He believes in every child, and he establishes high standards for all and lives by those high standards each and every day.
