BREAKOUT SESSION SET #1
10:00AM - 10:45AM

Tackling Teacher Shortages with International Teacher Recruitment
Salon D

Take a look at the successful strategies that two CT districts have employed to tackle teacher shortages through international teacher recruitment.

Windham will share its challenges and successes in the journey to recruit, hire and retain visiting international teachers for the dual purposes of cultural exchange and filling shortage area vacancies.

Hartford will share its Paso a Paso strategy, developed  to ensure that each student has consistent access to effective teaching and racially and linguistically diverse educators.

Come listen, learn, and discuss the possibilities for your district.

Student Voice & Agency: Aligning to a Vision of a Global Citizen
Salon B

The Farmington School District is enacting its Vision of the Global Citizen through the power of student voice and agency within the PreK-12 instructional core. This identity affirming strategy creates an intersection of deep learning, equity and belonging through a learner-centered approach to instruction, curriculum development and student engaged assessment practices.

Explore the importance of district-wide innovation that is aligned with student empowerment and agency in these post-pandemic times.

A Catalyst Team In Action
Salon C

Learn about Griswold’s District Catalyst Team, a professional learning community of teachers working together on innovative practices in the post-pandemic wake. Then cycle through “speed consulting rounds” that include such topics as virtual/augmented realities; blended learning structures; and the catalyst team ethos—connecting teachers to one another. This will be an interactive, hands-on experience, so bring a device of choice (smart phone, laptop or tablet.)

Portrait of the Graduate (for real) with Chat GPT and AI
Salon A

Chat GPT and emerging AI tools are challenging core assumptions about teaching and learning. One key takeaway is that high leverage skills (those often found in the portrait of the graduate) will become more important than ever as students navigate a future dominated by artificial intelligence.

Matt Mervis from Ed Advance will provide a context for AI in education and illustrate how student learning can be enhanced with artificial intelligence while addressing the downside risks. We will look at specific strategies and unpack how schools can use AI to prepare students for a rapidly changing college and career landscape.

Innovative Birth to Age 8 Collaborative
Hartford Room

New London will share its new Birth to Age 8 Collaborative, launched with ESSER funds. Unique and innovative early childhood pathway options have been developed and added to the school calendar. These offer parents (and teachers) new choices in when and how children are learning. Multiple data collections are guiding next steps in programming and co-partnering with parents/caregivers.

Leadership Well-Being: An Innovation for District Improvement
Rocky Hill Room

Using a research-tested design to support individual and collective resourcefulness, the “Self-Leadership” approach has been used nationally and internationally to support individuals in navigating their personal and professional lives in order to achieve optimal outcomes. District leaders will hear case study examples and learn basic practices in order to enhance and sustain individual and collective resources for the 8C’s of calm, clarity, curiosity, compassion, confidence, courage, creativity and connection.

The ESSER Grant
Connecticut Room

ESSER dollars continue to fund innovative recovery investments across our state.  Refresh yourself on the basics of ESSER funding and have your questions answered.  Kathy Dempsey from the State Department of Education will be available to discuss your questions about this unprecedented grant to Connecticut and its public school districts.

BREAKOUT SESSION SET #2
11:00AM - 10:45AM

Expanding Career Pathways in Partnership with Jobs in Demand
Connecticut Room

Come share and compare possibilities for career pathways with this partnership between Stonington High School and the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of CT. Components and benefits of the Pre-apprentice Certification process will be shared. How can you forge career pathways and partnerships that are right for the jobs in your area?

Portrait of the Graduate (for real) with Chat GPT and AI

Capturing the Positive Effect Size of Tutoring on Pandemic Learning Gaps
Hartford Room

Waterbury Public Schools has partnered with a national tutoring service to provide students with additional academic supports in order to address learning gaps due to the pandemic. We will discuss how we designed a system of 24/7 student supports, the challenges of implementation, and progress to date. Is this a model for your district or do you have an alternative one to share?

Delivering on SEL Needs
Salon B

This workshop will showcase Martin Kellogg Middle School’s (Newington) journey to promote social and emotional growth through SEL practices, from trauma-informed professional learning to using RULER and ReThink tools and curricula. Participants will be exposed to professional development examples and strategies that are easily transferable into any learning area.

Leadership Development
Rocky Hill Room

There is great need for effective and ethical leadership in the 21st century to confront personal, interpersonal and global challenges. The Westport Public Schools are committed to meet the challenge by establishing a “Center for Leadership Development”.  Join this session to learn how the district is moving forward in the development of critical leadership capacities through lectures, seminars, training opportunities and authentic opportunities to practice leadership skills.

Attendance Matters
Salon D

East Haven recognizes that school attendance is critical to addressing learning gaps that were consequences of the pandemic. This session will feature several high leverage, but simple to implement, strategies. They are focused on communication, students, families and faculty/staff in order to get students attending school every day, on time, and ready to learn.

Diversity Equity and Inclusion
Salon C

Since the pandemic, a growing number of school districts, including West Hartford, have appointed equity officers to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are foundational to every part of the school system.  What does the role of a district equity officer look like in practice?  This workshop explores the impact of equity officers in leading DEI work in schools.  Participants will examine strategic ways in which superintendents, district and school leaders, and district equity officers can work together to promote a shared responsibility for creating equitable school systems.

UConn's Office of Early College Programs (OECP) provides students with meaningful academic engagement to enrich their experience in high school and support their transition into college. OECP offers educational opportunities at the high school (Early College Experience), in University classrooms (Dual Enrollment), and through on-campus residential summer programs (Pre-College Summer and First Summer). OECP’s largest program, UConn Early College Experience (ECE), established in 1955, is the nation's longest running concurrent enrollment program and is accredited by The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships. UConn ECE allows high school students to take UConn courses at their high schools for both high school and college credit. UConn ECE supports approximately 14,000 Connecticut high school students in over 180 partner high school schools with teachers who have been certified by the University of Connecticut to teach UConn courses. Every course taken through UConn ECE is equivalent to the same course at the University of Connecticut. Students benefit by taking college courses in a setting that is both familiar and conducive to learning, and moreover prepares them academically and culturally for the world that awaits them.
